Proposed Shepherd's Bend Mine Protest: 09/16/10

On Thursday, September 16th, DSmithImages was on hand to photograph the protest against the proposed strip mine at Shepherd's Bend on the Black Warrior River in Walker County. The protest was held on the campus of The University of Alabama as The University of Alabama is the entity that owns the land in question. Students and members of the community gathered to protest the decision as they strongly feel it will completely damage the environmental conditions in the area while also threatening the water supply for the city of Birmingham.

On a side note, I was in attendance as an observer so I encourage you all to formulate your own opinion on the matter. I will not pontificate on the issue one way or the other. I will, however, voice my complete disdain and displeasure for the concept of "Free Speech Zones" on college campuses, especially public ones. It is my belief that a college campus as a WHOLE should be a free speech zone, not a small segment on the outskirts of the University.

I also encourage you all to research this issue and learn more about it.

Views from The Yellowhammer State: Tuscaloosa (Continued)

Greetings Everyone,

I just wanted to share with you another look at the city of Tuscaloosa when it comes to hosting an Alabama football game. The photos were taken during the Alabama vs. Penn State weekend, and they only represent a SMALL FRACTION of what was happening in town. Specifically, these photos are focused on the set-up and anticipation for ESPN's College Game Day, which was broadcasting in front of Bryant-Denny Stadium.

A small sampling can be viewed at http://www.dsmithimages.com under the "Views from The Yellowhammer State" gallery, and the full gallery can be viewed at http://www.dsmithgalleries.com/g/alabamapsu091110

Scenes from a Bowling Alley: Week 1

Greetings Everyone,

For the past year, I've been a part of the Well That's Cool "Lousy Bowlers League". I decided not to participate in the fall league for 2010, however, it is because I decided to photograph and document the season as it progresses.

The league kicked off on Wednesday, September 8th at AMF Bama Bowl in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I was on hand to photograph the start-up night, and I'll be visiting throughout the year to showcase what a season in this league tends to be like.

BBQ Alabama Style: Archibald's

Greetings Everyone,

I recently tagged along with some friends capturing video footage of a variety of "off the beaten path" Tuscaloosa landmarks, and we found ourselves at Archibald's BBQ in Northport. Anyone who lives in the Tuscaloosa/Northport area knows about Archibald's, but as I was photographing the restaurant, I got the idea to start another ongoing photo series involving all those great hole in the wall BBQ joints found around Alabama. Consider it a spin-off of the "Views from The Yellowhammer State" series, as I want to capture the essence of ALABAMA BBQ establishments, which usually take a backseat to those in Memphis and the Carolinas.

For those who don't know, Archibald's was established in 1962 by George Archibald, and it is now run by Archibald's son, George Jr., amongst other family members. It is the definition of a no-frills establishment, but that does not deter the incredible amount of business that it does. It has been featured in numerous publications throughout the country, and it is highly recommended for those who find themselves in the Tuscaloosa/Northport area.

Archibald's can be found at 1211 MLK Blvd, Northport, AL 35473.

Views from The Yellowhammer State: Tuscaloosa

Greetings Everyone,

I have been wanting to do an entry for Tuscaloosa in the "Views from The Yellowhammer State" collection for some time now, but I couldn't find the right avenue to present it. Well, low and behold, what better way to show off Tuscaloosa's place in the state of Alabama than images from the opening weekend of Alabama football?

These images were taken around the Quad and Strip before the Alabama/San Jose State game. They are only a small fraction of what's going on in town during a home game weekend, but hopefully, it will give those not living in Alabama a taste of what it's like to be in Tuscaloosa on a football weekend.

Views from The Yellowhammer State: Moundville

Greetings Everyone,

On Wednesday, September 1st, I hopped in the car and headed down the road just a little ways to the town of Moundville, located in Hale County just outside of Tuscaloosa. I decided to focus on the actual town area instead of the nearby Moundville Archaeological Park. The photos, of course, are a continuation of my "Views from The Yellowhammer State" series.
