On Thursday, September 16th, DSmithImages was on hand to photograph the protest against the proposed strip mine at Shepherd's Bend on the Black Warrior River in Walker County. The protest was held on the campus of The University of Alabama as The University of Alabama is the entity that owns the land in question. Students and members of the community gathered to protest the decision as they strongly feel it will completely damage the environmental conditions in the area while also threatening the water supply for the city of Birmingham.
On a side note, I was in attendance as an observer so I encourage you all to formulate your own opinion on the matter. I will not pontificate on the issue one way or the other. I will, however, voice my complete disdain and displeasure for the concept of "Free Speech Zones" on college campuses, especially public ones. It is my belief that a college campus as a WHOLE should be a free speech zone, not a small segment on the outskirts of the University.
